The neilson creative arts centre

The fact that I have, unlike some of my colleagues, never been to this art centre, I was very excited to go. Overall, I thought that my experience there was beyond what I would have ever expected.

What we did there actually surprised me, because I thought that we were just going to look at the different paintings displayed there. Instead, we got to draw our own two little paintings through inspiration from an actual painting. I inferred that we only got oil pastels for drawing our paintings. This leads me to ask a question, why were we only given oil pastels? I think that with a different variety of painting tools, it could have become a more unique experience.

I also inferred that the studio that we all went into to had different paintings. We got our first inspiration from it and drew our first paintings after. However, I noticed that all the paintings in the studio had a price on it. Was it it's price? Or did somebody who drew the painting get that much out of  it?(If so, can our paintings also get us some money?) This all reminds me of the time when I went to my first art museum. It had excellent artworks from all over the world, and were all done in their artist's own special way. What was similar about them though, was that they all had a price, which I later learned was how much the artists of those paintings made out of it.

In conclusion, I personally found this a pleasant and one-of-a-kind experience. If I ever get the chance to do this again, I'd definitely be ready for more!

  1. Very nice Sion. Yes I agree with you. I think it would be pretty cool to have more materials. But then again, maybe you only get pastels for a specific purpose...?

  2. I like the first paintings the one with the tree, it seems mysterious and cool to me. And paints might get to messy, or too complicated, considering the fact a lot of people didn't finish with the allotted time. Paints may have been harder to use, although pencil crayons or crayons would have. Although, a pencil crayon would probably take long to fill the page with. Anyhow, great blog!

  3. Sion Lee,
You ask about the prices on the labels by the artworks. The prices are set by the artist. If people want to buy the artworks, that’s the price they pay. If you like painting and get good at it, maybe you could sell your works one day. You have a strong, individual style.
You ask why we only use oil pastels: we’re not allowed to use wet paints, because we take the drawings back into the gallery. Also using the same medium means that when students come more than once, they discover more techniques and skills in using pastels.
Your pictures are like two scenes of a drama. The boy with a wolf and Moontree is like the hero setting off on a quest. The second picture, the Final Stand, with the Three Braves deciding the fate of the world is the fateful struggle. The earth seems in trouble. The tree seems to have become a powerful hand reaching up. Is it a sign of suffering or peace?
    Thanks for your blog.

  4. I do agree with Sabhat - colour pencils or crayons would be nice, but it would take longer to cover the page with a complete drawing. Could you imagine if they told of the cover the page with your favorite colour, and all had you were colour pencil? Yikes!

Anyways, I loved your pictures! How did they look in your head, before you drew them? What were your intentions? They reminded me of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief! (if you have seen that movie...) In the first picture, Percy is represented by the human, and Grover (the goat man) is represented by the "horse". In the second picture, the green, orange, and yellow things are the demons (what his teacher was), who intend on attacking Camp Half-Blood (the structure in the middle). What story can YOU make out of your pictures, or what do they remind you of?

  5. I was also feeling the same as we got there. I too knew that there had to be a gallery of sorts, but what I was expecting was greatly rivaled by what I saw.
The art there was absolutely amazing, and I could say the same about your 2 pictures as well.
I like your bottom picture, because it just gives me a sense of panic, but when I look at it a second time, I see a group of birds(Maybe?) in the sky trying to perch on a dead tree, and the next time I look at it, I see a hand coming out of a volcano.
Very great art, keep it up!

  6. thank you to everyone who took the time to comment on my blog!

I just wanted to say that I completely agree with you, and speaking from experience, covering a page that big with pencil crayon will take about 3-4hrs, and a lot of pencil crayons. Also, paint would be difficult to control and make accurate designs.

    Mr.Clarkson,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for commenting on my blog, and all the wonderful compliments! Also, is it okay if I call you Mr.Clarkson? Or do you prefer Austin? Anyway,I think maybe I just might try and sell something i create, or even keep it at home. That's a wonderful idea! Finally, I wanted to thank you for clearing up that question I had about the oil pastels, and I also felt that it would have been quite a mess if we were trying to move around wet paintings!

    Shazi-

thanks for your compliments! Do they really look like birds? Because I was actually leaning a little more towards three angels of justice holding sacred weapons that could destroy a city with one swing and had the fate of the universe in their hands! Haha, but don't worry! Your comment really was amazing.

    Chelsea, sabhat,and josh,

Sorry I had to answer you guys together! It would have been quite hard to answer your comments individually, and I felt that you guys had similar comments. As I mentioned previously,I feel that you guys are right about the fact that oil pastels was a better idea in that situation. Chelsea,Let me tell you that there are many books I love to read, and movies to watch. But one of my top favorites was the Percy Jackson series! I see what you mean, with my first painting, about Grover and Percy. Sahbat,I can totally relate to what you said about the tree in my drawing being mysterious, because that was exactly what i was going for! Josh, your a good friend.

  7. Sion your art work is very good and original. In your first piece of art work is that a giant boulder or moon. I see a man on a horse looking over a volcano at the moon. What do you see in your picture? I think we were only given pastels because those are the easiest to use and you can do do things like blend them. In your second picture it seems like a claw coming out from the ground and attacking dragons in the air.
