Neilson Art Centre-Shazi

In November, 7/8G went to the Neilson Creative Arts Centre. There we learned many techniques about making various art pieces and we explored them to a depth that I didn’t think existed. There we made 2 different art pieces. The first one that we made was after we got an inspiration from another painting in the gallery. The paintings in the gallery were very detailed and amazing. The pictures that most of us ended up getting looked nothing like the original.
The second picture that we made was from an inspiration from our first picture. Some of the results were very different and others were similar. We discussed everyone’s paintings in groups, first and second. The staff were very friendly and looked at our work as if there was another world inside of it as if it were alive, or telling a story. They were even able to tell a story about my painting, which was a completely random compilation of colours and shapes. Not even I was able to tell that much about my painting.
Overall, I personally thought that the trip to the Neilson Creative Arts Centre was a very fun and enriching experience that I felt, made art more fun for me. I am not the best in art and after going to this trip, my self esteem has grown, now that I have seen what I am able to accomplish if it is not being marked.

  1. Hi Shazi,
Thanks for your post. You certainly got a lot out of the program and discovered how deeply your imagination can go when it starts exploring artwork. You called the first drawing The Other World, and that's what your imagination is. It's wonderful how freely you explored your inner world. The result is full of fun and invention and positive energy. Your second drawing explores that world even more richly. You called it Confused, but it's good to let the creative process go there, which is why we recommend that the artwork not be marked. We need to let the imagination be wild, messy, colourful occasionally! The design is very strong.

  2. Good evening Shazi. I would like to say that I like the way you paragraphed your blog post so that it is more organized. I also liked how truthful you were to this program such as admitting how you weren't able to imagine the stories that your group came up with about your paintings. From what I can tell from your painting, it seems that your second painting is an alternate reality of your first painting. I especially liked how you kept the key points of your first painting in the second painting so that people can see how the second painting relates to the first one. From what I've read, it seems like you enjoyed your experience at the Neilson Arts Center.

  3. Shazi,

Hearing that your self-esteem has grown sounds like this program is very supportive. Your drawings seem so abstract, opposite to many others' drawings, where there isn't a shape anyone could recognize, harnessing our imaginations to interpret the drawings for ourselves. If possible, I would like to hear about the original painting that your first drawing was inspired by, seeing as how it seems like another world, as you said.

The difference in colours, from warm to cool, really changed how the atmosphere of the second drawing is to the first.

In conclusion, the trip sounded as if it provided a great learning experience to you, not only in knowledge, but in your own personal self as well.

  4. Heyo!

It's great to hear that your self-esteem has 'improved' upon visiting the Neilson Creative Art Center. Coming from you, it's a great thing. Anyways, I really like your second drawing that you've made. The division of the two very different colours really catches the eye of a viewer. You know what this reminds me of? Team Fortress 2. Red vs. Blu. That's what you were going for, wasn't it? I really liked the way you've drawn those red... lines? They really add to the chaos of this picture. The shapes in the bottom of the picture are really interesting. They seem mismatched and out of colour, along with the 'sun'. This adds a lot to the confusion and chaos of this picture, which I assume is what you were going for.

I can see how your second picture relates to your first one. You gave the second picture matching colours, and matched shapes, which makes it easy to look at. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. It's almost like the second picture is like a parallel universe isn't it?

All in all, I hoped you liked the trip as much as I did, and great job!
